AS GOOD A PLACE AS ANY OTHER

solo exhibition by Andrés Lozano

12.09.24 - 11.10.24

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

“As good a place as any other” unfolds, like vignettes in a comic book, multiple stories within a larger narrative. Each piece is presented as a window that invites the viewer to explore Andrés Lozano's conceptual world and venture into his universe, delving deeper into the study of his centers of interest. Lozano reveals new plots and environments from his creative repertoire, inhabited by an apathetic alter ego that is decreasingly less shy. Recurring themes such as architecture and the domestic space as a means of escape and protection from the outside world; opulent still lifes that accumulate vices and pleasures; or natural spaces that offer a respite in the midst of nature, are intertwined with new scenarios that expand the narrative and show, in passing, new facets of the Madrid artist's plastic discoveries.

Pictorial experimentation is crucial in Andrés Lozano's way of proceeding. As a passionate of drawing, which he uses and exercises every day as a research tool to compose images and transmit ideas, Andrés' paintings are usually based on a sketch or previous drawing that he selects from the pages of his notebooks. However, this original idea does not completely direct the course of the work, but is constantly guided by the process of exploring painting in its most material and tangential sense. In this way, his two passions, drawing and painting, intermingle, allowing the material to express itself within the work, and at the same time trying to redirect it towards the representative idea that started it all. An organic improvisation that is complemented by the initial planning of the drawing, which ends up yielding to the spontaneity and strength of the painting. It is this whole dance that interests, stimulates and vertebrates Andrés Lozano's practice.

“As good a place as any other” travels through the new environments selected by Andrés Lozano to continue exploring his devotion to images and painting.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Andrés Lozano (b. 1992, Madrid) is an artist who lives and works in Madrid. He holds a BA in Design from Complutense University of Madrid and a MA in Illustration and Visual Communication from Camberwell University of the Arts, London.

His recent practice looks at exploring the link between art, making and improvisation through a series of semi biographical paintings that materialize a world of apathetic and lonely characters surrounded by nature and interiors. Despite being strongly rooted in design and composition, as most of the ideas for his works come from ad-lib drawings, his paintings prioritize the process over the final result.
